XRP: Eleven Weeks of ETF Inflows and a Missing U.S. Spot Bid

Leotoshi

The record shows two numbers that cannot both be true. Over the eleven weeks ending in late September 2025, spot XRP exchange-traded funds recorded uninterrupted net inflows, accumulating roughly $1.75 billion. In the same window, the Coinbase premium — the spread between XRP on the U.S. regulated venue and the same asset on Binance — sat at 0.0055 percent. One figure describes institutional accumulation. The other describes its absence. Both are drawn from the same ledger, and the ledger remembers everything.

XRP traded near $1.50. It was up 15.6 percent on the week and down 6.3 percent within twenty-four hours of that reading. That is not a trend. That is a position being taken and partially unwound, and the difference between those two descriptions determines what an investor should do next.

XRP is not a governance token, and this matters for how its price should be read. The XRP Ledger launched in 2012 as an independent Layer 1, clearing settlement in roughly three to five seconds through a consensus protocol built on Unique Node Lists rather than proof-of-work or proof-of-stake. There is no native smart contract layer; programmability arrives through sidechains and the Hooks proposal set. Supply is fixed at 100 billion units, generated at genesis. Transaction fees are burned in negligible quantities.

What XRP does not have is a claim on protocol revenue. It pays no staking yield. It captures no fee flow beyond the burn. Ripple's escrow releases up to one billion XRP per month and returns the unused portion, which makes that escrow schedule — not the ETF tape — the largest recurring supply variable on the network. My audit practice since late 2017, when I verified supply and transfer logic across fourteen early ERC-20 contracts, has rested on one rule: read the issuance schedule before the price chart. Any analysis that leaves escrow outside the frame is analyzing the smaller half of the equation.

The regulatory arc explains why 2025 looks the way it does. The SEC filed against Ripple in December 2020. Judge Torres ruled in July 2023 that programmatic exchange sales did not constitute securities transactions, while institutional direct sales did. The approval of at least one spot XRP ETF during 2025 — an event the inflow streak implies — closes that cycle. The point is not that the litigation ended. The point is that the ending was priced months before the tape confirmed it.

Follow the gas, not the gossip. Here is the signal-by-signal audit.

The 365-day MVRV ratio sits at minus 11.75 percent, meaning the average wallet active over the past year is underwater. The bullish reading is straightforward: holders in loss are reluctant sellers, and supply thins near the lows. The problem is that MVRV has no universal bottom threshold. Through 2015, and again from late 2019 into 2020, negative 365-day MVRV persisted for months while price ground lower. A negative print measures unrealized loss. It does not measure exhaustion. The same metric that signals thin sell pressure also maps the density of overhead supply — every wallet that bought below $1.50 becomes a seller when price returns to its cost basis. MVRV at minus 11.75 percent describes trapped capital, and trapped capital is a ceiling as much as a floor.

Derivative positioning supplies the second signal. Open interest on Binance XRP perpetual futures has climbed to roughly $600 million, breaking its 180-day moving average. Funding rates have flipped positive. Together these numbers describe a crowded long: leverage has returned, and longs are paying shorts to hold exposure. When I traced USDT outflows from TerraLocked contracts to Binance hot wallets in May 2022, the conclusion was not that leverage caused the collapse. The conclusion was that leverage set the slope. Open interest expansion paired with a positive funding rate is a cost-of-carry chart, and rising carry is a symptom of crowding, not conviction. The analyst who published this signal conceded the hazard himself — excessive open interest is dangerous. His qualifier is the operative clause.

The ETF tape supplies the third. Eleven consecutive weeks of net inflows, roughly $1.75 billion cumulative. This is the figure that generated the headlines. Decompose it. Most weeks contributed between $10 million and $20 million. The bulk of the cumulative total traces to a single week of $110.5 million. That distribution is not steady accumulation; it is one large allocation surrounded by noise, and the source data never separated a market maker's inventory management from a directional buyer.

The second problem is structural. XRP had no spot ETF before 2025. The first year of any new ETF captures pent-up demand, not steady-state demand. I built a flow dashboard through the first hundred days of the 2024 Bitcoin ETF launches and recorded the mirror image of this pattern: consistent net outflow from Coinbase Prime correlating with retail ETF purchases, institutions distributing physical Bitcoin into ETF share absorption. The mechanism is now documented. A new wrapper does not create new buyers. It reroutes existing ones.

Relative comparisons deserve identical skepticism. Over the same period, Bitcoin ETFs logged three weeks of outflows, the largest at minus $462.7 million, while Ethereum ETFs shed $140 million in the week ending September 18. XRP's streak gets described as relative strength. It is also a base-rate artifact: a product with no prior history will always show its strongest inflow sequence in its first quarters. Data > narrative. The narrative is that XRP ETFs are outperforming. The data says that XRP ETFs are new.

The signal the source material labeled bearish carries the most information. The Coinbase premium sits at 0.0055 percent, effectively zero. Under ordinary conditions, cross-venue spreads compress through arbitrage, and a persistent premium reflects genuine marginal American demand. A premium near zero alongside positive Binance funding describes a specific configuration: offshore speculators are long, and the U.S. spot buyer is absent. The rally was financed by leverage in one jurisdiction and confirmed by nobody in the other.

The supply side compounds it. Ripple's escrow moves up to one billion XRP monthly. Against a cumulative ETF inflow of $1.75 billion, that schedule shifts an order of magnitude more notional every month. Weighing eleven weeks of ETF purchases as a structural bid while leaving the escrow calendar outside the frame is a measurement error, not a judgment call.

One more absence deserves recording. Across the entire dataset there is not a single on-chain ecosystem metric: no active address count, no payment volume, no DEX activity, no ODL corridor data. Every input is a price derivative or a fund flow. When an asset's entire analytical surface consists of exchange and fund data, the asset has decoupled from its application layer. XRP's stated value proposition is settlement. It appears nowhere in the evidence chain.

That settlement position is also contested from two directions. Regulated stablecoins clear cross-border value with fewer compliance ambiguities, and central bank digital currency pilots occupy the same corridor. Neither displaces XRP's liquidity today. Both compress the long-run addressable market the utility narrative depends on.

The counterintuitive point is not that XRP is overbought. It is that the three bullish signals are not independent observations. ETF inflows, rising open interest, and a recovering MVRV all trace back to a single variable: price. When price rises, inflows follow, leverage follows, and unrealized losses shrink. Presenting three correlated outputs of one input as mutual confirmation is a statistical error, and it is the most common error in flow-based crypto analysis. Correlation presented as corroboration is how positioning data becomes a story.

The same standard applies to the bearish case, and here the source material also overreached. October seasonality — eight declines in thirteen years, averaging minus 5.14 percent — is a sample of thirteen. It carries no statistical weight and is almost certainly the product of post-hoc pattern fitting. Discard it. The actionable bearish evidence was never the calendar. It was the near-zero Coinbase premium, paired with an escrow schedule that nobody modeled.

Four weeks will resolve the structure. Watch three numbers in sequence: the Coinbase premium crossing 0.05 percent, which would confirm real U.S. spot demand; open interest growing gradually rather than accelerating, which would separate accumulation from crowding; and sustained weekly ETF inflows above $50 million, which would distinguish a rerouted allocation from a durable bid. If the premium stays flat while leverage continues to build, the exit will be crowded on one side only. The ledger will record which.
