The most consequential statement about cryptocurrency this quarter did not arrive through a protocol upgrade, a court ruling, or a network outage. It came through a series of interviews, delivered by two men with very different reasons to tell the same story.
Anthony Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital, predicted that mainstream users will soon adopt cryptocurrency without ever knowing it. Crypto will sit underneath everyday financial services the way TCP/IP sits beneath the internet — invisible, assumed, indispensable. Around the same time, Stuart Alderoty, chief legal officer of Ripple, rejected the industry's favorite caricature of itself. The "small group of young male hobbyists" story is outdated, he argued. Millions of Americans from every walk of life are already using crypto, whether the headlines acknowledge them or not.
I have learned to treat such statements as data rather than noise. The timing of this narrative matters. We are in a sideways market — the kind of prolonged consolidation where price signals weaken and story signals strengthen. When the market stops trading charts, it trades plots. And "unconscious adoption" is one of the most powerful long-term plots crypto has left. It converts a speculative niche into infrastructure. Infrastructure is priced differently than speculation. It is supposed to be boring, durable, and present — properties that feel highly attractive after months of choppy, directionless price action.
But there is a reason Ripple's chief legal officer, not its chief technology officer, made the demographic claim. Alderoty has spent years defending XRP in a courtroom. His words are not detached observations; they are positioning. And the positioning suggests a profound strategic bet: crypto will not win the mainstream by converting users to a philosophy of self-sovereignty. It will win by embedding itself into systems users already trust.
From code audits to community heartbeats, I have watched this industry oscillate between two dreams — total independence on one side, total integration on the other. Each dream leaves something out. The first leaves the mainstream behind. The second might leave the values behind. This article is about what the second dream gains, loses, and hides.
The Stack We Keep Hiding

And the demographic profile has broadened beyond the young, male, tech-heavy early adopters. But ownership is not the same as usage, and usage is not the same as unconscious, embedded, everyday use. Owning Bitcoin on a retail exchange is a very different act from having a banker settle a cross-border transaction on a blockchain rail without your awareness.

Some of these numbers are improving annually. None yet justify the claim that the United States has crossed into a mainstream unconscious-adoption majority.
I am not calling Alderoty a liar. I am saying that the assertion should be put back into the category of aspiration until independent data catches up. That is the standard we should hold for anyone who shapes the industry's public story — especially someone whose company is still litigating the terms of its compliance.
Who Captures the Value
Adoption narratives always contain a hidden claim about value capture. The question "who will use crypto?" is inseparable from "what will the assets be worth?"
If the silent future arrives, value capture changes dramatically. Today, the market prices digital assets as lottery tickets and user applications as attention games. Fee burn, governance rights, speculative momentum — these are the vocabulary of a young market. In the unconscious era, the underlying asset behaves more like a settlement instrument: a bridge between fiat currencies, a finality layer, a vehicle for institutional liquidity. It is not a vehicle for gambling.
The winners in this scenario are the compliant payment rails, the stablecoin issuers, and the networks that have spent years courting banks rather than rebels. The Ripple story, for all its legal turbulence, has always positioned XRP Ledger as precisely that: a settlement backend for financial institutions. Alderoty's statement is not a casual PR aside. It is the product roadmap, narrated in public.
I draw the same conclusion from a very different corner of the ecosystem. For years, I have argued that the data availability layer is dramatically overhyped: most rollups do not generate enough data to justify the dedicated infrastructure being built for them. The pricing of that infrastructure assumes a world of loud, on-chain-intensive, block-space-thirsty usage. But if the real adoption wave is quiet, compliant settlement traffic — a few large, well-capitalized flows moving between institutions — then the demand profile is entirely different. The Quiet Compromise

The celebration of "unconscious use" is partly a celebration of crypto's own disappearance as a user-facing movement. If nobody knows they are using crypto, nobody can tell the difference between crypto and the existing financial system. That is exactly what intermediaries have always wanted: absorb the technology without absorbing the ethos. Self-custody, transparency, permissionlessness — the features that made this technology meaningful to its early believers — are precisely the features that an institutional proxy must suppress to make the unconscious experience feel normal.
Think about the incentive structure from the perspective of a bank integrating a stablecoin rail. The bank's compliance team will demand the ability to freeze suspicious funds. The risk team will demand visibility into the flow of money. The product team will demand that users never see a block explorer. Each demand is rational at the level of the individual institution. Collectively, they hollow out the properties that distinguish crypto from the systems it was built to replace.
I have run this conversation with developers who believe that great infrastructure should be felt only in its absence. "Imagine the internet," they say, "if users had to understand BGP routing." The analogy is flawed. If a BGP route fails, you reload the page. If a settlement infrastructure fails, money disappears. The low-stakes comparison ignores the fundamental difference between information and value. And the high-stakes nature of money means that the invisible layer will eventually fail in public, with consequences far worse than the era of audible, visible, sometimes frustrating crypto.
There is also a more prosaic danger: the PR gap. "Unconscious adoption" could function as a forever narrative — a belief system that absorbs every negative data point and still insists it is early. Each allowed its believers to avoid the discipline of measurable milestones. If we do not hold the unconscious adoption story to specific indicators — stablecoin settlement volumes, embedded wallet growth, payroll integration counts — it will become a clock without hands: eternally about to strike the hour of mainstream adoption.
Finally, I want to stress-test Alderoty's claim with a lawyer's precision. "Millions of Americans from all walks of life" does not tell us what "use" means. Does it include a person who made a payment through a fintech app that settled on a crypto rail without her knowledge? If so, the claim is easy to satisfy and almost meaningless for the industry's self-definition. Does it include a person who actively buys and holds digital assets? Then we are back to the 17 percent ownership figure. The interval between these two definitions is the entire room where the adoption debate lives, and the spokespeople are standing at different ends of the room.
Where That Leaves Us
I believe the unconscious adoption future is coming. I have met the people who want it — not because they are crypto enthusiasts, but because they want their money to move without drama, across borders, without asking permission from a bank teller. The technology is advancing in that direction. The regulator is slowly reconciling the industry with the existing system. The user will be offered convenience, and most will accept it without inspecting the ledger.
The question is not whether the future will be invisible. It will be. The question is whether it will be invisible with integrity. Whether the protocols buried beneath polished applications remain audited, verifiable, and open. Whether the reserves behind the stable assets are confirmed by independent parties. Whether the governance that shapes the system's human and economic values remains accessible to the community even when the community does not understand what governance means. Building bridges where DeFi once built walls — but building those bridges with visible load-bearing structure. Not hidden concrete that no one can inspect.
We can offer institutional convenience without sacrificing independent verifiability. We can design for the unconscious user while leaving a door open for the conscious one. And we can tell the institutions integrating crypto rails that their license to use this technology includes an obligation to let users look under the hood — not because users will ever do so, but because the capacity to look is what separates infrastructure from custody.
The audit was just the beginning of the bond. The bond continues every day the system remains transparent, every time a community protects a vulnerable user, every moment a protocol resists the urge to cover its own tracks in the name of seamlessness.
Liquidity flows, but culture remains. And the culture that remains — of auditing intent as well as code, of caring for the user even when they do not know they are being cared for — is the only infrastructure worth building. The rest is just plumbing. The plumbing matters. But it was never the point.
